Submittal Requirements for Residential Backup Generator Permit

NOTE: PORTABLE GENERATORS THAT ARE SIMPLY USED WITH EXTENSION CORDS AND NOT PERMANENTLY ATTACHED TO A STRUCTURE DO NOT REQUIRE A PERMIT

1)    General; Provide Building permit application & a copy of the manufacturer’s specifications/installation instructions.

2)    Site plan (provide a legible copy) must include the following;

a)    Distance from generator to combustible construction. (Structure and vegetation).

        Note: Typically, 5’ – check manufacturer’s specifications.

b)    Distance from generator to property line(s).

c)    Distance from the generator to any operable doors or windows.

        Note: Minimum 5’ must be shown on site plan.

d)    Location of trench for gas line. (if applicable)

e)    Location of trench for electrical conduit(s). (if applicable)

3)    Fuel Gas requirements (Natural Gas or Propane);

a)    Location of gas shut-off valve and sediment tube.

Note: If generator is fueled-by Gasoline, Diesel or Propane, max. allowed amounts are 10g, 50g, & 25g
