Submittal Requirements for Residential Backup Generator Permit
NOTE: Portable generators that are only used with extension cords and are not permanently attached to a structure do not require a permit.
- Building Permit Application
- A copy of the manufacturer’s specifications/installation instructions
- Site Plan - including the following:
- Distance from the generator to combustible construction (Structure and vegetation). Note: Typically, 5’ – check manufacturer’s specifications.
- Distance from the generator to property lines.
- Distance from the generator to any operable doors or windows. Note: Minimum 5’ must be shown on site plan.
- Location of trench for gas line. (if applicable)
- Location of trench for electrical conduit(s). (if applicable)
- Fuel Gas requirements (Natural Gas or Propane)
- Location of gas shut-off valve and sediment tube.
*Note: If the generator is fueled-by Gasoline, Diesel or Propane, max. allowed amounts are 10g, 50g, & 25g
